Silk Quilting Fabric

Making a quilt at home is a fun job. It is a good time pass for housewives and increases a lot in their knowledge. The trend has now reduced as the automatic machines have taken this responsibility, yet there have been many ladies who like to perform this job by themselves. Normally, the quilts are made of cotton fabric, but the silk quilts also have their own advantages. Silk tie quilts and silk kimono quilts are particularly famous.

Making a quilt with silk fabric is both a challenge as well as a learning activity. It is different from cotton quilting in a number of ways and one can just not make a good silk quilt if she does not have the right knowledge or the support of an experienced person.

Silk is no doubt very elegant and there is nothing like that; however, making a quilt with silk fabric is a totally new thing. Silk fabric is very strong because of which you cannot pin or sew it easily. Use thinner sewing machine needle to sew silk and use special silk pins for pinning. Regular size pins and needles result in pinholes in the fabric. These pinholes are permanent and will not remove like the cotton fabric. They look very irritating and reduce the value of quilt/doona.

The positive side of this phenomenon is the quilts made of silk are very durable and their threads do not break easily. Because of the quality and elegance of the silk, the colors of quilts do not get dim. Silk is slippery and you can face many problems sewing it properly. The solution to this problem is ironing. Iron a piece of clothe prior to sewing. In this way, the fabric will not slide away while sewing. This can save you time and energy. As another option, you can cut the full piece of clothe into various pieces. The cutting pieces can be combined together in the end through sewing or by pinning.

Silk quilts are unusual, so it may be hard for you to find silk fabric for quilting. Most of the stores prefer cotton or wool fabric. Apart from this challenge, silk is also way expensive than the other two fabrics. As silk does not have many customers, the stores keep a limited stock of it. You will face difficulties finding the color of your own choice and have to comprise on whatever you get at store. Apart from all these risks, a silk quilt is worth using. Once prepared, it has no comparison with quilts prepared with other fabrics.
